INTRODUCTIONS: Hi my name is....High 5 a lineup to have everyone say their names.
Welcome to Saturday Night Dance at Trinity. Thanks for making us your destination for some Saturday night fun! We love you!!! Who is here to learn swing dance for the first time? Thanks for coming! We love teaching new beginners how to swing dance!
We are here to teach you a 6 count Swing Dance Basic and a few easy moves.
Swing is an interpretive style of dance that originated in Harlem, New York in the 1930s.
It is a subjective style of dance. No mistakes- all you have to do is rock step and no one will know the difference.
WARM UP- The BOUNCE is an integral part of Swing. Jump and land. The foot plant is shoulder width-Knees slightly bent. This is a downbeat dance style so think about bouncing down into the floor rather than up. Bounce on the balls of the feet. In Rhythm: each Bouncy WALK get 2 beats of the music,- Bounce in place, travel with walks. Forward traveling walks start with the heel of the foot. RUNS get one beat of the music-run on the toes forward and back. Now mix the Bouncy walks and the Runs traveling in a circle. some runs forward and back. If you can walk and run and count to 2 you can do swing. Try some jazz steps-Mess around, Crazy Legs, Jig Walks, Tacky Anne, Box Step. Side Taps, Twisty Walks and more.
BASIC: 2 Bouncy Walks + 2 runs or a Quick Step (Rock Step)
Rhythm-Each bouncy walk gets 2 beats of the music
Rock Step is 2 transfers of weight or 2 runs: one back and one forward. Each runs gets one beat.
LEADS and FOLLOWS
For the Basic: Leads start L, Follows start with the Right foot.
Warm up with a few bouncy walks before starting the basics.
Talk back to us-Always say it in your head: Rock Step, Bounce Bounce, or Rock Step Step- Step-. Count it-1,2,3,4,5,6. or slow slow(to warm up) then quick quick slow slow.
SWING IS A PARTNER DANCE
2 positions: Closed and Open
Each position has a physical frame so the partners can easily lead or follow.
Teach basic partner safe space dance etiquette-for the first 2 classes. Teach introducing yourself to each partner in the rotation, how to ask someone to dance with you, saying no and receiving a no without needing an explanation. Invite dancers to take a partner of the opposite role.
Face your partner: Leads place their Right arm in the middle of the Follow`s back. Follow`s left arm is bent and rests like saran wrap on Lead`s Right arm. Ask -Are you comfortable? Comfort is important. We can adapt the position to eliminate discomfort. Relaxed front arms. Handhold: knuckle sandwich-no thumbs. The Lead starts with some Bouncy walks, (also called the Jockey) to warm up and to get on the beat before starting the 6 count Basic with the Quick Step
Face your partner. Arms are 90 degrees bent, Rest the arms at your side, hands fit like Lego, Join the leads Left hand to the follows Right hand. Relax the arms-stepping away from partner until you feel natural medium elastic tension-not spaghetti arms and not robot arms.
Ask: How do you fell about that?
In Open position the Quick Step in led by going away from the Follow with a natural stretch of the arm away from the body. The Quick step gets 2 beats.
Music- Clap the beat: 1, 2 -Start on any 1 beat. Clap on count 2.
Dance the Basics-the basic is important. Count them in. Say the basic out loud or in your head all the time.
Let`s add some moves onto the basic step.
Name the moves- The name of the move is not important-what is important is continuing the basic throughout the move.
DEMO the moves.
It doesn't matter if you make a mistake, - no one will notice.
The Basic is important- Every New Move Starts and Ends with the Quick Step!
Demo each move with a basic on top saying Quick Step Bounce, Bounce- to show the basic footwork remains the same whether dancing in place or traveling.
TEACH THE MOVE
Leads are communicated visually and physically to the Follow thru arm and hand connections and thru transfers of body weight over their feet.
TEACH ARMS for Leads first then Follows
TEACH FEET for Leads first then Follows
SET UP for the new move starts on the Quick Step. The Quick step is important for setting up the new move. Think Quick LEAD on 2 of the Quick Step
The Counteractive Lead for a Follow Turn
Leads first bring their hands opposite to the way they want the follows to turn. Follows, by keeping their frame with their connected hand in front of their eyes, can both feel and see where the lead wants them to go.
SUMMARIZE Moves are a basic guideline so you know how to do a move-then you can develop it or change it to suit the music you are dancing to or to suit your own personal style of dancing.
Follows concentrate & feel what the Lead is taking you into.
PRACTICE: 2 basics on top
MUSIC: Have Fun!
END OF LESSON: Thanks for coming! You were awesome-the best ever!
Think about taking a progressive course where you can learn other styles of swing.
A new one is starting_____. Who here is taking the Beginner Course? Congratulations! Everyone, especially the new comers, are invited to ask us to dance. We love helping you to practice what you just learned:) We encourage you to get out on the dance floor and practice all your new moves. You will retain 90 percent of what you just learned if you do it tonight. Practice 2 minutes a day doing your basic to improve your dancing. Listening to swing music is the best way to make your dancing look and feel fabulous. So stay for the DJ dance. Have Fun everyone and see you next Saturday night for a review of the basic and more new moves to add to your dancing enjoyment.
